With the intent of seeking revenge, Shyala & Neil meet in the jungles of Chhattisgarh & here starts the bloody journey !!! So, would the two soul-mates unite & fight their inner demons. Would they ever fight their odds & be recognized as Tiger Mates ??? The side actors – Purba, Kedar Singh, Anand, Raghav & others are also well portrayed in the action-flick.

So, would Shyala & Neil seek their revenge? Would they ever discover their true-calling & become “Tiger Mates”. The book is very well edited, scripted & while reviewing, we could visualize scenes like a movie 🙂

Closing Thoughts

“Tiger Mates” provides a cinematic experience that challenges the visualization of the readers. The Suspense factor in the book brings an additional twist !! If you want a cinematic experience with “twists & turns”, than you should get your hands on “Tiger Mates” !!!

Every person in life has dreams & aspirations but many times or should we say, most of the times “Plans remain plans” & finally, things divert into an unplanned direction. But, it all depends on the individual & his/her capability to bounce back !!! Well, if this sounds “interesting & inspiring”, than you should definitely get your hands on Varun Gautam’s novel “The Symbol”. Today, we review Varun’s first novel – The Symbol

About the author

Varun Gautam is an engineer [from Pantnagar University] turned author. He has brief stint of around 8+ years in HCL Technologies. As mentioned on his website, he was always interested or passionate about writing & “The Symbol” is an amalgamation of fictional & factual experiences. Varun is reachable at varungautam13@gmail.com

Detailed Review

SymbolLooking at the book cover, one might mistaken this book as a sci-fi thriller but as mentioned above it is a “mixture of facts & fiction”. The story revolves around three characters – Dhruv, Mohan & Arjun. It is very common that people or more often friends are compared with each other based on multiple factors i.e. salary, house & many other materialistic things.

Mohan & Arjun – two friends have their own plans & priorities; but as they say in Hindi “Allah Meharban to Gadha Pehalwan”, Mohan gets more than what he deserves. Arjun’s life takes a drastic twist when he fails to clear his IMS entrance exam & life becomes completely directionless !!! With life going no-where & Arjun completely dejected, he comes across a device “Symbol” & than starts a series of twists & turns !!!

Would the “Symbol” prove instrumental in solving Arjun’s problems or it would bring-in more problems ??? This is what 230 pages long power-packed novel is all about… We could draw a parallel-comparison with “Aftab Shivdasani’s short story in Darna Mana Hain” 🙂

Dhruv is Arjun’s cousin brother & he is narrating the story. It is a breezy read & it surely keeps readers hooked & also motivated !!! While reading the novel, I could feel myself in Arjun’s shoes since, failures & successes are part & parcel of “everyone’s” life.

Closing Thoughts

The book provides an “Edge Of the Seat” thriller experience & the “Plot” creates this experience !!! However, the details of the central character i.e. Symbol [whether it is a time-machine/some other gadget etc.] that changed Arjun’s life is not disclosed, it is left upto reader’s assumption !!!

Apart from this; the story, characters & perfect ending were well-thought off & were detailed to perfection. This is the first time we reviewed a book of this genre on our blog & we really enjoyed the whole journey :) At around 230 pages, “The Symbol” is a breezy read & surely provides “dose of inspiration” !!!

Final Verdict – 3/5

Thanks to Varun Gautam for sending a review copy of “The Symbol” !!!

What happens when two authors from different genre’s & from different parts of the world team-up & come up with a book ? Well, the result would be an interesting mix of their individual strengths, story-telling would definitely be a “treat to the readers” !!!

“Private India” by Ashwin Sanghi and James Patterson is one such book. James Patterson is the best-selling author behind the critically acclaimed & best selling “Private” Series [Private L.A, Private Berlin etc. to name a few].

Detailed Review

The story starts off with a sequence of murders in Mumbai [none of them are related to each other] with unfortunate local bombings. A murder happens in a resort which is managed by a private agency named “Private India”. Private India is headed by an ex-cop, Santosh Wagh who is the director of the private agency.

Santosh Wagh’s team comprises of a bunch of “officers” who have the capability to crack any case; no matter how complex that case may be !!! There are a series of murders & in each murder, an evidence is left at the crime scene [whether it help’s Santosh Wagh and this team to crack the case is revealed in due course…. mystery is definitely kept intact :)]

The number of murder’s keep increasing & there are other issues like God-men, Politics, Corruption etc. are also coupled with the murders [doesn’t this remind us of Singham Returns :)]. Some aspects of Indian mythology have also been clubbed with the murder scenes; especially sacred feminine. Just like any other Bollywood masala movie, this book packs all of it. At every point, the reader can visualize the murder & this is the main plus of the story since, it keep’s the reader thinking.

Closing Thoughts

The book provides an “Edge Of the Seat” thriller experience & the “Plot” creates this experience !!! This is the first time we reviewed a book of this genre on our blog & we really enjoyed the “murderous” journey 🙂 At around 450 pages, “Private India” is a breezy read, the credit goes to the big font-size used in the book &  “effective story-telling”.

How many of us out there in the crowd have the following feeling:

  • “Sigh, I am in the wrong profession”
  • “After engineering, I wanted to go into Web-Development but I am currently working as an Embedded Engineer”
  • “I should have been an Entrepreneur instead of working in an organization”

When I completed my engineering [and that too not from a well-known college & I only played Cricket :)], the only aim each one of us had is ” To have a STABLE JOB in TCS/Wipro/Infosys irrespective of the kind of work that might be assigned” without knowing what we wanted from life after Engineering !! And as you might have guessed, I was not selected on any of these companies from Campus !!!

On a lighter note this post is not about my “Life History” [and surely readers would be least interested in it 🙂 ] but to stress the point that “What if as STUDENTS, we would have received proper GUIDANCE from industry insiders i.e. If you need Entrepreneurial guidance, you would turn to an Entrepreneur/ If you want to work in a startup, you would be turn to a startup employee”;  Mantra being “Turn for an advice/guidance to someone who has been there, done that !!

“Become An Engineer not just an Engineering Graduate” by Mr. Sivakumar Palaniappan is a book that acts as a “Holy Grail” for engineering students/fresh engineers.

About the author

Sivakumar Palaniappan is an Author, Motivational Trainer, Key Note speaker, Career Coach & Happiness Consultant, a hands-on engineer who has worked in companies like NXPQualcomm etc.

Detailed Review

“Become An Engineer not just an Engineering Graduate” is written with the aim of encouraging engineering graduates to be passionate engineers, help them enhance their employability potential & enable them to sculpt their career as an engineer. Please note, it is not a placement guide but it is a culmination of research done by the author through analysis of engineering education, discussion with placement officers, HR managers, parents etc. & trying to solve a pain-point – “Don’t be an Engineer for the heck of it but be a PASSIONATE engineer“.. doesn’t this sound like the 3-Idiots dialogue “Beta kabil bano kabil, Kamyabi to sali zak mar ke tumhare piche ayegi..” [Source – Galmsham]

Combined

Is this book for “YOU” ?

The book [Around 150 pages] is a breezy read with the message that “the reader i.e. engineer/student” should act on the tips. The book is structured in a nice manner where every chapter starts with a “Student Tale” i.e. a real-life incident that triggered the need for that particular chapter.

The book acts as a guide for “would be engineering students” to select the right stream of engineering so that when they are done with engineering, their interest/hobby also becomes their “profession”. Every chapter ends with a “Mantra” so that the reader can bring the “words” in each chapter into “formidable action”.

Key Chapters

As mentioned above, right from basic things like “Why choose an Engineering Degree” to “Why be a Student Entrepreneur”; the book tries to answer those tricky questions. Some of the notable chapters from the book are:

Chapter (5): Why should I develop a Useful Hobby – Having a USEFUL hobby [not sleeping, watching TV etc.] is very much important and you never know when your hobby becomes fulltime profession when you are bored of your day job.

Chapter (8): How to do What I Love to Do

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life – Confucius

10 steps approach to do what you love to do:

  1. Find your passion
  2. Find your finances
  3. Find your core strengths
  4. Find your weaknesses
  5. Focus on your strengths & improve upon your weaknesses
  6. Have the commitment
  7. Don’t ignore the present
  8. Get ready to give up
  9. Have a strong belief in yourself
  10. Have a big dream

Chapter (10): How to Use the Power of Social Media in Career Crafting

We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, question is how well we do it – Erik Qualman

5 ways to use Social Media for Career Crafting

  1. Use the power of top three social sites i.e. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook
  2. Build a positive online identity
  3. Learn through social media
  4. Demonstrate your expertise & credibility
  5. Use your online presence effectively

We have done lot of book review’s in the past [few of them here] most of them were on Business, Startups & Entrepreneurship but this time we digress a bit & touch upon an emotional journey penned by Vasundhara Ramanujan in her book Shades of Life

Why ME !!!

We live a peaceful, happy and a healthy life. We never appreciate much what we have, everything is taken for granted but when there is sudden twist that is when our life gets a new meaning. A very recent example to prove this point is “Yuvraj Singh” & his latest advertisement explains it all !!!

Detailed Review

The author “Vasundhara Ramanujan” takes us through the turbulent journey of her fifteen year son, Adtitya who is diagnosed with kidney failure & how he fights his way through the disease with the continuous support from his mother and his family.

Aditya, just like any other teenager is enjoying his life to the fullest when suddenly in the winter of 1996 things begin to change. His mother takes him to the doctor when there are frequent complaints of severe headache; only to realize that his kidney’s are on the verge of complete failure.

The books reflects the unconditional love of a mother towards her son who suffers through the most of his life and the courage of the child who faces the truma of the disease for nearly thirteen years of his life. The mother not only helped her son cope with the disease but also motivated and inspired him to continue his education. The mother-son duo live through this disease with the help of their supporting family.

The book takes us through the endless doctor visits, numerous tests, long dialysis days and the hunt for a tissue match for the kidney transplant. It was impressing to see that the mother who herself had just fought breast cancer offers her kidney for the transplant. Unfortunately for some reason Aditya’s body rejects his mothers kidney this is when his elder brother Dhananjay donates his kidney to Aditya. Now, Aditya is not only hail & hearty but has achieved his Post-Doctorate in Physics.

Final Thoughts

The book is a quick read, around 150 pages & story is not only well written but also arouses “Emotional Quotient” in the reader. It conveys an important lesson – “Nothing is impossible if right action is taken at the right time”

There have been many articles on this blog about Unconference(s) but just like it, there is information scattered on the topic across the internet. There couldn’t have been anyone better than Kiruba Shankar to write a book on Unconference. Before I start the book review, let’s see what exactly is an Unconference:

An unconference is a facilitated, participant-driven conference centered on a theme or purpose. The term “unconference” has been applied, or self-applied, to a wide range of gatherings that try to avoid one or more aspects of a conventional conference etc. [Source : Wikipedia]

To keep it simple, An “Unconference” is a gathering where every attendee is a speaker & it is a conference of the attendee, by the attendee & for the attendee.

About the Author

Kiruba was one of the organizer’s of BlogCamp, Chennai [the first Blog Unconference in India] that was held in 2006 & under the non-profit organization “The Knowledge Foundation”; he & his team have organized many successful unconference’s namely BarCampChennai, BlogCamp, Proto.in, SearchCamp, WikiCamp, FailCamp & many more…

Detailed Review

Being an active unconferencer himself, the author has collated his experiences in his simple book which is around 150 pages long.

The book starts with the basic topic of “Introduction to unconference” given that many of the readers might not be familiar with the concept of Unconference itself !!! The concept is very well explained along with the origin of Unconference [excerpts from the book below]

As stated by Dave Winer – “The sum of expertise of people in the audience is greater than the sum of expertise of people on stage” and called Fundamental Law of Conventional Conferences. If a random group of people were picked from the audience & were put together to discuss the same issue of the conference, it is likely that there is greater energy, enthusiasm & learning. Thus, the idea of unconference’s was born.

For many, it might seem that unconference is similar to “Conference with MORE Freedom” hence the author has explained the “Differences between conferences & unconferences“. Some excerpts from the topic below:

The best time in a conference is during coffee breaks. Unconference is like one big coffee break. Great conversations are definitely expected in unconferences !!!

Rest of the book dives into different methodologies to spice up the meetings & gives details into how “Boring” meetings/conferences can be transformed into “Interesting & Interactive” unconferences. These topics help the reader to organize meetings [with smaller i.e. < 5 members as well larger audience i.e. 50+ more] in a more intuitive way so that every person in the audience takes something back from the meeting !!! Some excerpts from the book on these methodologies below [PS: Every chapter on these topics are sub-divided into a) Uniqueness of the methodology. b) How to organize it. c) Case-Study]:

Open Space Technology

Open Space runs on two fundamentals: Passion & Responsibility. Passion engages people in the room. Responsibility ensures that things get done.

– Harrison Owen, Creator of Open Space Technology.

Four principles of Open Space Technology:

  1. Whoever comes are the right people.
  2. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened.
  3. When it starts is the right time.
  4. When it’s over, it’s over.

Appreciative Inquiry

Appreciative Inquiry leverages the most positive possibilities by involving all the voices in the community.

– Bliss Browne, Founder – Imagine Chicago

It focues on what is possible rather than what is not. It starts with the belief that every organization & every person in that organization has positive aspects that can be built open. It is one of the best methods to build an “OPEN” company culture !!!

Most of the times we try to observe/read about other’s success; but during the journey of attaining success that person would have encountered many more difficulties or even failures. It is these failure(s) that makes a person mature & also enables him/her to make less mistakes. Remember the famous quote of Albert Einstein – Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new [detailed meaning here]. In this article, we review an advance copy of the book – “Losing It” by Bill Lane.

About the Author

Bill Lane is a Management expert, Communications coach, Writer & Business school lecturer. He has consulted for firms ranging from Hughes Electronics to E & Y. He was head speech-writer for GE’s legendary CEO Jack Welch for more than 15 years. You can find his previous books here

Detailed Review

  • As stated earlier in the article, it is very important to learn from failures & this the main theme of “Losing It”. The book starts off with this theme where Bill Lane describes his own experience where he got an inner-instinct that he might loose his job in GE. He stresses on the need for adoption & change whenever needed – The ultimate sustainable advantage in your career is the ability to learn : Grab it, Lean it & Run with it.
  • Unlike his previous book which focussed on GE & Jack Welch, this time around Bill Lane not only cites his own experiences but also has experiences shared from companies like Enron where he stresses on Integrity –  The integrity standards of an organization come from the top.
  •  There are interesting tips for managers where he cites the need for a 360 degree feedback & the need for constant learning and improvement. He shares a nice tip from Kip Condron of AXA-Equitable – CEO’s who spend too much time doing charitable stuff, raising funds for charities & giving graduation day speeches when they should be ON the job; at the helm – in this ice field we are all steaming through. He stresses the need for Micro-Management at incredibly deep levels within the company when necessary to actually add value. It becomes a necessity [and not an option] when an organizational survival issue is involved.
  • Rest of the book revolves around Guidelines for succeeding in corporate careers. There is effective use of Storytelling to convey these tips which makes this book an interesting read. The most impressive advice from this book is below [excerpts directly taken from the book]:

The best advice that can be given to anyone in Management, Organizations, Politics or life in general is to FIGHT & STRIVE endlessly; to expand your responsibilities & never stop, never coast, never get comfortable no matter how many people tell you how great you are & how well you are doing. Keep impressing yourself & others. “SHOW OFF” with actions, never words.

Bill Lane’s Success Mantras

Be Paranoid about keeping current

You can never appear to coast your knowledge. Stay potently curious. Act like a benevolent nut & fanatic. Sign up for jobs you don’t fully understand & surmount the learning curves masterfully. Stay on the edge, even if to you it seems forced & phony. The ultimate sustainable advantage in your career is the ability to learn.

Banish yes – people

False validation will sink you. Surround yourself with smart truth tellers & listen to them. Your goal should not be to feel good; it should be to know what’s happening in the business. Without suffering the blabbering of fools, hear out anyone who has a worthwhile observation. Reward your reports for their candor.

Make micromanaging look good

Learn the business right to it’s roots so you understand how everything works. Otherwise you could be the victim of a snow-job because you don’t know the difference between truth & fancy. Once you have enough information to be sure you have good people handling things, you can back off a little. But don’t preside like a doodling tycoon. Manage.

Hold a moral ethical compass

Some failings are beyond your control; integrity is not. Avoid even the grey zone. Avoid even slight discomfort. Imagine yourself on the other side. If you would not agree with it, do not do it. Some spin & BullShit is ok, but never tell a lie. And never break the law, even if it doesn’t seem morally or ethically wrong to do so. Don’t get steeped in the sleaze culture. Integrity isn’t necessarily instinctual. You have to practice it.

Pay attention to the subtext of jokes

If there’s anything people are uncomfortable telling you, there’s a good chance they are going to let it slip in their humor. If your colleagues stop busting your chops good-naturedly or your boss starts taunting you about how you can go back to sleep, take note. Something has shifted. You’re going to need to figure out what’s changed & up your game considerably.
