All of us love the movie Taare Zameen Par, the movie touched our hearts because of the “Teacher Student” chemistry. The movie had a very interesting dialogue “Every kid has his/her own share of likes & dislikes. It is left up to us to capitalize on that passion by encouraging them”.

The teacher [Aamir Khan] could identify Ishan’s passion for drawing. He went an extra mile to maneuver his teaching style to suit Ishan’s needs [or a dyslexic kid] which helped the child a lot. In the end as we all know, Ishan excelled both in drawing & studies; thanks to his teacher 🙂

Every person has that one ‘Special Teacher’ in their life who has inspired and motivated them to follow their passion. Every child is unique and has his/her own talents. With changing times and fast moving life, parents/teachers find it difficult to locate a suitable activity hub to nurture their child’s talent.

KleverKid, an innovative after-school startup aims to bridge this connect between parents and the activity hubs by keeping the parents informed about the best after-school programs happening in the city. It plans to democratize learning by helping parents to find the best tutor, workshop, skating master, programs etc. to nurture child’s abilities.

Today we have a look at KleverKid which can be loosely termed as “Helping hand for parents to get the best out of their kids” 🙂

Hyper-local Education marketplace

The biggest problem parents face when they move to a new city or new apartment is “How do I find a suitable tutor for my kid”? KleverKid comes in very handy in this scenario. Being a resident of Bangalore [Whitefield area], we performed a search on KleverKid for “Academics & Sports” program-type and the results were encouraging.

The interesting aspect is that it also shows “The distance between your location & the selected institution/club”. This gives a feel-good factor for the parents [lesser the distance, better for them]. The information on the facilities provided by the selected institute was up-to-date & we could further filter out the options at micro-level.

Ratings, Reviews & more

Whether it is going for movies or ordering food online, reviews and ratings have played a pivotal role for driving user growth and ensuring transparency. The “Social” feature plays a crucial role in influencing the consumer behavior. This feature was very much required on KleverKid.

Instead of relying on Word-Of-Mouth, parents can now rely on the ratings/reviews given by others on the platform. We would love to see a “Verified” icon [similar to JD Verified on JustDial] to add another level of confidence for it’s users.

Social Sharing

With the increased penetration of WhatsApp, it is a medium that is hard to ignore. Parents using KleverKid can share details of a particular tutor/feedback to others via WhatsApp which would definitely prove beneficial for others.

Along with WhatsApp, users have options to share feedback on Facebook, LinkedIn & other social media channels.

Couple of features which we feel could have been incorporated:

  1. Actual photographs of the facilities shared by existing users. This would drive more user adoption.
  2. An option to compare services based on price/feedback/facilities.

If you are looking out for after-school programs or tutors for your kids, do give KleverKid a spin & share your feedback in the comments section.

A new type of malware, Ghost Push has been discovered by Cheetah Mobile, the fourth largest publisher of applications worldwide as per App Annie. Distributed through non-Google app stores, this virus has affected 14,846 types of phone and 3,658 brands.

[Image Source – Cheetah Mobile’s blog]

According to CM Security Research Lab, it’s the most widespread and infectious virus it’s seen to date. So far it’s been affecting 1.3 million devices globally. Currently, India has 1,44,199 devices being affected by this virus and is ranked as No.2 in terms of the amount of devices being affected. The virus is mainly spread through Europe, Russia, the Middle East region, and southern China. Cheetah Mobile has so far discovered 39 apps that contains the virus.

Ghost Push : How it works

Ghost Push installs unwanted applications like ‘Monkey test’ or ‘Times service’ on the device. These applications cannot be removed easily even by doing a factory reset or using normal antivirus software. The malware slows down the system, drains the battery and consumes large amounts of cellular data. Disguised as legitimate applications, Ghost Push can spread itself widely via commercial SDK’s or browser ads.

Ghost Push : How to detect the infection

Clean Master and CM Security can now detect the infection. CM Security Research Lab is also currently developing a toolkit aimed specifically at ‘Ghost Push’ removal, which will keep your phone safe. Get the tool and protect your phone now!

The second quarter of 2015 was wrought with high profile vulnerabilities and hacks. Cyber criminals became more inventive in their attack methods to infiltrate and abuse existing technologies that are often overlooked. India emerged as the top targeted nation by data-stealing malware to hijack business transactions and steal information from small and medium sized businesses.

Each re-purposed existing malware, tool-kits & techniques to target victims from India, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Taiwan and the United States [US], among other countries.

Myla V. Pilao, Director, TrendLabs Marketing Communications, Trend Micro said

In the second quarter, we saw a shift in the threat landscape with cyber criminals becoming more sophisticated and creative, amplifying existing methods of attack, and using them in new ways. The ethereal outlook on the threat of cyber-crime can no longer be held by the general population. This quarter demonstrated that the potential damage caused by cyber attacks extends far beyond a simple software bug to hacks of airplanes, smart cars and television stations.

Coupled with the fact that attack volumes are of the magnitude of hundreds of millions, the threat that cyber criminals pose today is more tangible than it has ever been.

Some of the key numbers from Q2 2015 demonstrate the challenges of today’s threat landscape are:

  • Number of malware detections across APAC in Q2 2015: Over 118 million
  • Number of spam messages blocked across APAC: Over 396 million
  • Hits to malicious URLs from users across APAC: Over 214 million
  • Hits to malicious URLs hosted in the APAC region: Over 50 million

Hackers are taking more strategic approaches, refining their approach and targeting more selective victims to improve their infection rates. This is reflected by the exponential increase in the use of several traditional attack methods, including a 50 percent increase in the integration of the Angler exploit kit, a 67 percent growth in overall exploit kit-related threats, and CryptoWall ransom-ware becoming highly targeted, with 79 percent of infections occurring in the U.S.

Additionally, government entities have realized the full impact of cyber attacks during the second quarter with massive data breaches on both the Internal Revenue Service [IRS] in May and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management [OPM] system in June. The OPM data breach was the largest of its kind to date, exposing personally identifiable information of approximately 21 million individuals. Other government agencies were impacted by targeted campaigns using macro malware, new command and control [C&C] servers and the continued use of newly exploited vulnerabilities and 0-days Pawn Storm.

In alignment with its philosophy of financial fitness, Money View – an android app – has recently incorporated yet another feature to its app called ‘reimbursements’. This feature can be used by anybody maintaining bills to track all out-of-pocket outlays thereby curtailing the hassle of physically maintaining or logging in expenses.

The ‘reimbursable’ feature is particularly helpful and saves time for busy professionals who travel extensively on business either locally or out of station and have to maintain records of incidental expenditures for submission.

There are two ways that the Money View app helps its users maintain their bills – by categorising the bank SMS alerts one receives, under ‘reimbursements’ & by uploading photographs of hard-copy receipts taken with the user’s smartphone and then uploaded under the Bill & Receipts category which can further be tagged with a note on the type of expenditure it represents.

The following, further illustrates how this feature works, in a simplified manner

From banks SMS alerts

  • When a financial transaction is made (debit card, credit card, NEFT), one immediately gets an SMS notification that is summarized on the app (Rs. 780 – Dining, Rs. 1000 – Transport etc.)
  • On clicking on the particular transaction, the ‘Edit Transaction’ window opens up
  • By selecting ‘Yes’ and ‘Save’ under the entry ‘Reimbursable’, this particular detail gets captured
  • Cash transactions can also be manually entered and marked as ‘reimbursable’

Through receipt images

  • After taking a picture of the bill receipt the image can be uploaded on the app directly under the category – Bill/ Receipt (Add New)
  • Thereafter, the specific details of the expenses have to be entered for further reference by making entries under ‘Notes’ – (Lunch with Client etc.)

Blippar, the world’s largest image recognition & augmented reality platform, launched the first-ever proprietary mobile visual search. This re-launched version of the original Blippar app will change the way consumers interact with the physical world.

Opening the free Blippar app, users will be able to simply “look” at any object via the camera on their mobile devices to activate instantaneous digital search and draw information directly from the world around them.

Blippar Founder and CEO Ambarish Mitra said

Blippar has already worked with thousands of the world’s largest brands and publishers to create engaging branded experiences that are triggered by objects, magazine pages, advertisements and more, “blipped” by millions of users around the world. It is the healthy appetite for this new behavior that has fueled the move into visual search.

The human imagination, curiosity and the quest for knowledge are all often limited by our capacity to define and assign language to describe and seek answers from the world around us. Today marks the beginning of a new era of search, where curious users will be able to visually search the world through the lens of the Blippar app.

The technology holds massive potential for enriching real world experiences and delivering genuine value to our users. The visual search is not replacing text-based search, it’s an alternate behavior which satisfies people’s spontaneous needs of instant object focused curiosity, therefore introducing the light web.

Blippar is launching this new capability by first making all English-language DVD covers and movie posters including some Bollywood movies, sports logos for the Indian Cricket League and other US and European sports league blippable.

When users’ blipp one of these items or images, they will instantaneously be presented with a range of contextual, snack-able information. For example, if they blipp an movie poster they may be presented with access to the trailer of the movie, details on what people are saying about it on Twitter or more information about the cast.

This is just the first step in Blippar’s ambitious mission to make the entire physical world visually searchable via mobile devices and wearables. In the future, Blippar will add to its growing catalogue of blippable objects in stages with the ultimate aim of making everything blippable – from an apple, to a chocolate bar, to a dog on the street, to the Eiffel Tower and beyond.

Web-based search as it exists today has dominated the digital experience, both online and mobile. From inputting keywords to digging through pages of links to access information, this governing search behavior is limited by vocabulary and literacy. Blippar’s image recognition capabilities will extend beyond the confines of language to empower consumers to instantaneously pull timely, relevant information directly from the environment around them.

Blippar’s proprietary search engine is net neutral. Blippar users will be served the highest quality and most accurate sources of information within the app, displayed on a fluid user interface that uses design and color input directly from the blipped item itself. The speed and accuracy of the Blippar platform allows users to blipp and access information faster than traditional web search, with no delay in latency. Further, Blippar’s location-based predictive computing uses deep learning and artificial intelligence to refine and personalize its visual search results for each user.

Blippar will continue to work closely with brands and agencies to bring products to life through engaging interactive experiences. The updated Blippar app is available for download on iOS and will soon be available on Android.

About Blippar

Blippar is the world’s fastest growing image recognition and augmented reality app. Utilizing proprietary, best-in-class image technologies, Blippar enables users to instantaneously pull interactive, informative digital content directly from the environment around them, their favorite publications, brands and objects via their iOS, Android or Windows devices. The “hits” keep on coming for Android’s mediaserver component. Trend Micro discovered yet another Android mediaserver vulnerability, which can be exploited to perform attacks involving arbitrary code execution. With this new vulnerability, an attacker would be able to run their code with the same permissions that the mediaserver program already has as part of its normal routines.

This vulnerability has been designated as CVE-2015-3842. While it affects Android versions 2.3 to 5.1.1, Google has fixed and published details this vulnerability via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Currently, there are no known active attacks against this vulnerability.

trend-micro-logo

This discovery closely follows three other major vulnerabilities in Android’s mediaserver component that surfaced recently. CVE-2015-3823 may allow attackers to trap phones in endless reboots, ANDROID-21296336 may render devices silent, while CVE-2015-3824 [Stagefright], can be used to install malware through a multimedia message.

How it works

The vulnerability involves AudioEffect, a component of the mediaserver program. It uses an unchecked variable which comes from the client, which is usually an app. For an attack to begin, attackers convince the victim to install an app that doesn’t require any required permissions, giving them a false sense of security.

Possible threat scenarios

This attack can be fully controlled, which means a malicious app can decide when to start the attack and also when to stop. An attacker would be able to run their code with the same permissions that mediaserver already has as part of its normal routines.

Since the mediaserver component deals with a lot of media-related tasks including taking pictures, reading MP4 files, and recording videos, the privacy of the victim may be at risk. Devices with customized versions of Android but with no modification made to the mediaserver component are also affected.

A dilemma users may face is that it will be difficult for them to locate the cause once an attack occurs. In our demo, we simply triggered the attack by running an app; this is convenient and intuitive for disclosure. While attacks can be triggered by apps alone, real-world attacks won’t involve apps that are easy to detect.

The malicious app will try as much as possible to appear legitimate and use dynamic load technology to remain undetected while triggering the attack several days/months later, either persistently or intermittently, similar to other malware.

Solutions

End users can block this threat from the onset by downloading Trend Micro Mobile Security (TMMS), which can detect threats trying to use this vulnerability and running any of the scenarios presented. Android users can also reboot their device using safe mode to un-install the malicious app.

However, this method might prove difficult, especially for those unaccustomed to tinkering with their devices. We also recommend that device manufacturers patch their devices regularly to prevent their users from suffering from attacks that use this vulnerability.
