I have been freelancing since October, 2019 and work with different set of clients on blog creation [business and technology], social media strategy, and more. The intent was to bridge the gap between content and technology by coming up with insightful pieces [blogs, whitepapers, etc.] that highlights work & expertise in their field of work.

Irrespective of the profession, personal branding has become extremely important. It could be done through writing or designing stuff that highlights what you are capable of doing! Designing can be a difficult job, especially for a person who is not from that field. This is where a tool like DesignCap can come to rescue. DesignCap is an online graphics designing software that lets you create awesome graphic-designs without the necessity to have design skills.

In this blog, we do a detailed DesignCap review and deep dive into the features, pricing, and other essential things related to this freemium designing tool. The review of DesignCap was done with the Plus Subscription that was offered by their team.

DesignCap Review – Creating Elegant Graphics with ultra-simplification

Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, if there was a requirement for graphics designing, you had to install a designing software that is relatively heavy on CPU and GPU processing. Not to forget that procuring the software was a costly affair.

Fast forward now, there are options for creating ‘Awesome’ graphics at the click of a button and there is no need of installing designing software on the machine. This is where DesignCap can come to your rescue, as it lets you create amazing graphical designs, even if you have little to no designing skills.

DesignCap lets you create graphical designs for a wide range of sectors:

DesignCap is localized in seven different languages and lets you create high-quality graphic designs on the cloud. All this, with simple drag and drop operations!

Sign Up for DesignCap

Signing up with DesignCap is very easy. You would be prompted to choose an organization type so that the DesignCap can tailor-make the offerings according to your requirements. I chose self-employed.

Once you choose the organization type, you need to select the current role. I rightly chose Blogger/Writer 🙂

With this, the sign-up process is complete and you have to check the email to confirm your account.

DesignCap Editor

With DesignCap’s ‘Plus Plan’, you can create upto 1000 designs. The Cover photograph for this blog review was created using DesignCap and it took us less than ten minutes.

On logging on, you are prompted to create a design with ‘custom size’ requirements or ‘preset’ size according to the design type. The ‘preset’ size helps in scenarios where you are designing a particular category-type [e.g. Poster, Fyler, Infographic, etc.] for the first time and have minimal [to no] information about the ideal size.

Templates

There are close to 3092 templates across all categories on their website. There is a provision to search for templates according to your requirements.

We tried searching for common topics like Social Media Marketing, Technology, Sales, etc. and it suggested the templates that matched our search query. It would be great if there was a ‘detailed search’ kind of option so that it becomes easy to narrow the search and reach to the expected templates with less effort!

Using the templates provided by DesignCap, it becomes easy to create posters, flyers, Facebook cover, attractive resume, Instagram cover, YouTube Channel graphics, and more. Once you select a template, there are numerous options to customize the design.

Customizing Background

After selecting the template, you would be offered numerous ways in which the design can be customized. You can change the background, upload images for usage in the design, add modules like Facebook like buttons [or Icons & Text, etc.], add custom charts, add elements [like abstract shapes, frame masks, etc.].

In the design shown above, we performed modifications on the background by adding ‘gradient color’ and it worked like a charm. Here, we have switched to a solid background. DesignCap lets you ‘Undo’ & ‘Redo’ changes endlessly which essentially means that there is an option to witness a ‘try and freeze‘ kind of experience before zeroing on the final design.

It would have been great if DesignCap could identify the color composition of the background and appropriately suggest the best-suited font color that goes well with the background color.

Adding ‘sector-specific’ photos [powered by Pixabay]

Whether you are a technologist or educator or running a sports academy or just planning to add juice to your content via photographs, DesignCap lets you customize their designs by adding stock photos from Pixabay.

This clearly avoids the headache of going to another website that provides stock photographs and spend additional budget on procuring photos from that site. DesignCap offers close to a million stock photographs in categories like Business, Animal, Art, Car, Celebration, Fashion, Food, Kids, Music, and more.

All you need to do it drag & drop the photo in the design and adjust as per the dimensions. It does not require much expertise and also avoids the headache of leaving the DesignCap platform in search of stock photos.

Adding ‘Modules’ and ‘Textual Content’ to beautify the Design

There are scenarios where you would like add team information in a business presentation or want to add popular icons (along with text) in a poster or show timelines demonstrating the progress of an activity. This is where ‘Modules’ in DesignCap is super handy as it lets you add modules like icons & text, images, steps, timelines, diagrams, comparisons, and more.

Once you select a particular category of ‘module’, it provides you with number of module options that can added to the design under development. It would be awesome if DesignCap can add a ‘hover’ kind of a feature [that can be toggled on request] when the user hovers on a certain module, as the content [and layout] in the module is not clearly visible.

The ‘Text tab’ on the left side bar lets you add text to the design. DesignCap provides a number of preset text styles and simply clicking on the text object adds the text box to the design.

Our Creation with DesignCap

I do not come from a Design background but have used Adobe Photoshop many years back. Apart from the cover image for this blog, I also designed the blog & social media covers that can be used as Facebook and Twitter cover.

The creation took less than ten minutes since the background was provided by DesignCap and all I had to do is add text objects to fill in the social media information. The Getting Started guide by DesignCap is exhaustive and provides information on the features of the platform with examples.

Top reasons to use DesignCap

There are alternatives to DesignCap, the most popular one is Canva. Though I have not used Canva to a great extent, my experience with DesignCap [Plus Plan] has been phenomenal. It caters to diverse sectors and the user need not have technical [and design] experience to use the platform.

These are the top reasons to use DesignCap:

  • DesignCap is easy to use and even a novice in Design can leverage the platform to the fullest.
  • It provides an extensive ‘image’ library that is powered by Pixabay that removes the unnecessary headache of going to different websites searching for stock photographs.
  • DesignCap Plus Plan comes with awesome templates that can be used in creating mesmerizing infographics, business presentations, sales pitch, brochures, business cards, leaderboards, and more.
  • The ‘learn’ section on DesignCap provides the user valuable information on how to make the most of awesome designs. It is super-helpful for someone who wants to gather information on the ROI from offerings by DesignCap.

Potential Enhancements in DesignCap

Based on the experience with DesignCap, we identified certain functionalities that can be of addition to their user based:

  • Addition of hover feature on Modules for better clarity on the module selected by the user.
  • Detailed search option for narrowing the search results. Current search feature is basic and narrowing down to the exact result takes time, since DesignCap provides lot of design options.
  • Suggestion of font colors based on the composition of the background image used in the design.

DesignCap Pricing

There are three pricing models in DesignCap:

  • Free
  • Basic
  • Plus

Users have the option to be charged on a ‘Monthly’ or an ‘Annual’ basis. The Annual option offers good savings and best-suited for someone [individuals or organizations] looking to make the most out of ‘features and pricing’ of DesignCap. Here is the detailed information on pricing plans offered by DesignCap:

There is one thing which is common between startups such as Housing, Snapdeal, and FreeCharge. Jason Kothari, referred as business turnaround leader was the former CEO of Housing & FreeCharge and former CSIO [Chief Strategy and Investment Officer] of Snapdeal. He started his career as the co-founder and CEO of Valiant Entertainment, a US based superhero entertainment company.

Majority of us know about the founders of these startups but not many might know that Jason Kothari played a pivotal role in the turnaround of these companies when they were facing the the most turbulent times. He is also the Executive Producer of the Bloodshot [Sony Pictures] starring Vin Diesel.

We had the opportunity to read the book Irrationally Passionate: My Turnaround from Rebel to Entrepreneur by Jason Kothari. The book reveals the inside story of how a rebel, train-wreck kid transformed himself into a successful young entrepreneur and business leader who became one of the top ten paid executives in India while in his 30s. Irrationally Passionate is a highly personal, authentic, open, and complete account of a young entrepreneur’s life.

About the Author

Jason Kothari went on to transform distressed internet icons Housing, FreeCharge, and Snapdeal, helping them save billions of dollars in value. He is also served as the advisor for giants like Softbank and real-estate developer Emaar which has invested billions of dollars in India. You can find more about Jason Kothari from his LinkedIn profile.

Detailed Review

Before I start off with the detailed review, one thing which I have to admit is that this book was in my bucket list since this blog has been a small [yet a crucial role] by interacting with startup founders about their startups. Coming back to the review, the book starts with Jason recollecting his childhood events where he tried his negotiation skills with a seller and managed to get a chess board for Rs. 30. This is what made Jason realize that he had the persistence and gut to turn things around in his favor.

He gets the first taste of entrepreneurship at the age of 19 where he is raising funds for a company named Valiant Entertainment which he has followed since his early years. The author also touches upon his childhood life in Hong Kong and later in the US.  There are interesting learnings from the game of baseball and how Jason went on the learn the sport, inspite of facing several hurdles. As mentioned, Functioning as a unit made him realize the importance of being a selfless player and putting the team first.

It also touches upon the passion that Jason Kothari had for entrepreneurship and how he hung on to his passion. He also talks about the importance of making mistakes and not repeating the same by taking valuable lessons from those mistakes. Te most interesting part of the book is the section where he talks about the turnaround of Valiant Entertainment from bankruptcy and bringing it back to life. This is when he was the college student at Wharton and arranged funds from family & friends. Few years later, he transformed Valiant entertainment into world’s third largest superhero entertainment company which was later sold for $1oo million.

We particularly liked the chapter titled Not every seed is meant to bloom a forest which talks about the transformation of Snapdeal to Snapdeal 2.0, the turn-around of events, interaction with Snapdeal investors, transformation of FreeCharge, and more. It is a must-read for anyone who is slightly interested in entrepreneurship and startups.

Few excerpts from the book:

Sometimes, the most important decision an entrepreneur makes is knowing when to pull the plug. You have to understand what a sunk cost is and not throw good money after bad. These decisions are often among the most agonizing the entrepreneur encounters. As a battle-hardened business-people, we have conditioned ourselves to never quit, never accept defeat.

That’s what so deceiving about disinvestments or the closing of business lines or geographies – what on the surface may appear to be a ‘loss’ may actually be the key that unlocks the door to strategic wins.

There is emphasis on the sale of FreeCharge for shaping up Snapdeal 2.0. There are chapters that highlight about his role in Housing.com where he took over as the CEO at a very rocky time. He cites the importance of focusing on important features when building a product and why entrepreneurs [and key executives] should take right product decisions when building a startup. He also speaks about the series of events and interactions that led to the closure of renting module in Housing so that there is concentrated focus on the buying-selling module. He took the decision even when employees and other executives were of the firm belief that renting module was key to the company.

We liked the writing style and the usage of simple language throughout the book. It is around 230 pages long and consists of 11 chapters in total. We specifically liked the sections where he talks about his career as a turn-around specialist in prominent Indian startups. As entrepreneurship is hard, he also talks about the importance of meditation in controlling emotions and reducing stress & anxiety.

Closing Thoughts

It would have been better if more details were added about how Jason Kothari dealt with decision differences with other leaders within the company, internal politics being played, and more. This would have been an icing on the cake for this otherwise wonderful read!

The Indian Media & Entertainment [M&E] industry is at the forefront of disruption. The availability of high-speed mobile internet at affordable rates, growing literacy, and smartphone adoption are some of the reasons for the growing consumption of media in the country.

There are currently 451 million monthly active internet users in India and that number is growing at a rapid pace. This has led to changing patterns predominantly in the digital video consumption space which is growing at a staggering 46% CAGR over the last two years. There was a sharp rise in the consumption of non-Hindi or non-English content i.e. regional content with the evolution of new OTT [Over the Top] players targetting that customer segment. Alt Balaji, MX Player, Amazon Prime, NetFlix, HOOQ, Zee5, Voot, AltBalaji, Hoichoi, etc. are some of the OTT players that are capitalizing on the ‘video consumption wave’.

If you are from the urban part of India, there is a high possibility that you may have paid subscription of one or more OTT services like NetFlix, Amazon Prime, or more. What if the content from major OTT players is accessible in a single location? You and your loved ones can binge watch shows in 4K together sitting in the comfort of your homes.

ACT Fibernet, the third-largest wired broadband service provider in India is known for offering high-speed internet [upto 1 Gbps] at competitive rates. It also offers DTH services in certain parts of India. A couple of months back, the company unveiled its new brand identity and announced its plans to be more than an ISP. Through #FeelTheAdvantage, ACT Fibernet is transforming and aiming to be the future of streaming, gaming, smart homes, and more. ACT Stream TV 4K is its foray into the media streaming space.

ACT Stream TV 4k Review

If you are already an ACT Fibrnet user and an ardent fan of originals [on OTT platforms], you might be interested to give a shot to ACT Stream TV 4K. ACT Stream TV 4K is an Android based devcie that runs the TV version of Android Pie. We have been using this Android-based offering for a couple of months and this our detailed review based on that experience.

ACT Stream TV 4k – What’s In The Box

The packaging was minimal and impressive. ACR Stream TV 4K is a small rectangular shaped streaming device that has right number of ports and the minimalistic design makes it ultra-portable. Below are the contents that you would receive in the retail packaging:

  • Remote Controller
  • Power Adapter
  • LAN Cable
  • HDMI Cable
  • RCA Cable
  • User Manual
  • 2 AAA batteries
  • ACT Stream TV 4K box

Though the device works only on ACT Fibernet, the review device that we tested had that feature bypassed. Some of the streaming services, including installation of software updates were tested using an Internet Dongle and it worked perfetcly fine!

Our tests also included random disconnection of internet during firmware updates and as expected, the device passed all those tests.

ACT Stream TV 4k – The Hardware

The device runs on Android 9 Pie. It is powered by Hi Silicon 3798M V200 that has Multi-core 64-bit high-performance ARM Cortex CPUs and a dedicated Multi-core high-performance GPU. The chipset supports maximum 4K x 2K@60 fps 10-bit decoding and 1080p@30 fps video encoding. It is capable of decoding multiple file formats, including H.265/HEVC, AVS, H.264/AVC MVC, MPEG-1/2/4, VC-1, and more. Below is the snapshot of key features of Hi Silicon 3798M V200 chipset that powers the ACT Stream TV 4K:

Data Source

The box has 2 USB ports, 1 ethernet port, 1 HDMI port, 1 AV output, and 1 SD card slot. The device has 2GB RAM and 8GB Flash. The device has Dual band WiFi [2.4G & 5G] and 802.11 ac. It also has Bluetooth connection. The device has enough processing capability and storage capacity to download apps and games from the Play Store. You can also connect USB drive, Joystick, or smart camera to the USB ports. The box supports Dolby Audio and is capable of playing 4K content as well as HDR 10 content. Since it is Android based, it also supports Google Assistant and Google Chromecast.

ACT Stream TV 4k device is accompanied with a remote controller that is ergnomic in nature. The remote controller is beautiful to hold in hands and the keys have excellent tactile feedback. It has IR and Bluetooth connectivity. Other than the normal Volume [Up & Down] keys; there is a circular navigation button and couple of hot keys present at appropriate locations on the remote. There are hot keys for Google Assistant, Google Play, Live TV, NetFlix, and YouTube.

During our testing, we did not much inconvenience while searching for content on the box using the remote. We even tested search using Google Voice and the accuracy was good. Along with the hot keys, you would also find the normal keys like Mute, Power, Back, and Home keys that are present on normal remote controllers.

It is important to note that currently ACT StreamTV4k is available only for ACT Fibernet customers.

ACT Stream TV 4k – Getting Started

For setting up the ACT Stream TV 4K,  connect the ACT StreamTV4k HDMI output with the TV’s HDMI input using the HDMI cable provided in the box. Then connect the power adaptor to ACT StreamTV 4k. Once the ACT StreamTV4k is ON, follow the series of instructions on your screen.

To use Google Assistant, the remote controller has to be paired with the TV via Bluetooth. Since the device is based on Google’s Android platform, Google credentials have to be entered to login to the ACT Stream TV 4k. As the box only works with an active ACT broadband connection, you would be asked ACT credentials which could either be your mobile number or email address used at the time of registration.

ACT Stream TV 4k – Experience

Before we jump into this main section where we talk about the user experience, let us tell you that the interface in the ACT Stream TV 4K is very much similar to Fire TV Stick. The good part about this is that there is not much learning curve involved in using the box as people who have used Fire TV Stick or Chromecast [which is very much likely] might like the device from the word go!

The box uses a clean interface where there are fixed tabs on top – Home, Apps & Games, Live TV, and Offers. Based on the currently active tab, the contents are updated based on the services that you have subscribed to. The first tab shows the featured content across different streaming platforms that come pre-bundled in the box, irrespective of whether you are subscriber or not. The next row shows a list of the OTT platforms that are available on the device. When you use this interface without loading any extra apps, it would show majority of the OTT platforms that come pre-loaded in the box i.e. Voot, Netflix, Hotstar, Hooq, Hungama Play, Eros Now, Zee5, YuppTV, and more.

It is worth noting that Amazon Prime does not come pre-installed in the box and you would need to download the same from the Google Play Store. You can also side load apps and also stream content via Chromecast. We received good number of OTA updates during the process of testing which means that ACT Fibernet is working hard to fix issues and improve the overall customer experience.

Customers can subscribe and unsubscribe to OTT services with a single click and the amount gets added in the ACT bill. This makes the entire experience very seamless. We are yet to test the ‘subscription’ feature using the ACT Android application. For people who are not interested in OTT services can opt to watch close to 300 TV channels. There is a mix of free and subscription based TV channels.

The ‘offers’ section lists the offers that are available with the box. Customers receive one month of Zee5 and two months of free HOOQ. These offers are subject to change depending on when you subscribed for ACT Stream TV 4K.

You can uninstall apps by performing long-press of the center button and clicking on the ‘uninstall’ option. Select apps/channels may not be available for pre-install and most of these are the one’s that come pre-loaded with the box. The ACT Stream TV 4K does not support recording of content of any form either on StreamTV 4K device. Last but not the least, ACT Stream TV 4K comes with a built-in Chromecast and also supports casting of mobile devices. All you need to do is select streamtv4k1007 for casting.

Though we faced couple of lags and hangs while using the device, the overall experience was very smooth. It is only a matter of time, the technical team behind the development of ACT StreamTV 4K fix the issues via FOTA updates.

ACT Stream TV 4k – Pricing

Services for ACT Stream TV 4K are available in four Indian cities – Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Delhi. The ACT Stream TV 4K is priced handsomely at Rs 4,499. If you are an ACT subscriber, you would definitely find lot of value in using the device as it provides a superlative experience. Below are the plans for the city of Bengaluru:

If you are residing in any of the cities where ACT Stream 4K TV is available, do check out the Stream TV 4K Plans. The pricing looks right as it is less expensive than Fire TV Stick 4K which is priced at Rs. 5,999.

ACT Stream TV 4k – Closing Remarks

The box and remote controller are well-designed and we liked the egronomic design of the remote controller. Barring aside a few software lags and resets, the experience with ACT Stream 4K TV was superlative. If you are already an ACT Fibernet customer, you should definitely go for ACT Stream TV 4k

We are living in an era where digitalization of almost every aspect of our lives might be possible, sooner or later. One technology that has played a major role in ensuring that people, devices, and services are connected is Internet Of Things [IoT]. With the power of IoT, you can now access the smart fan, smart electricity meter, lights, doorbell, etc. in your home from any location, as long as both the entities are accessible over the internet.

One entity is the smart device that needs to be controlled and the other entity is the smartphone app through which the device can be controlled. IoT has already made inroads in the manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and other industry verticals where efficiency, accuracy, and throughput are of prime importance.

Smart Homes – Driving the Internet of Things [IoT] market

As per a report by NASSCOM, the overall IoT market is expected to grow upto USD 15 billion by the year 2020 [Source]. Smart Homes is one vertical in the IoT space which is slowly getting adoption. Some of the major driving factors as far as smart homes is concerned are

  • Improved internet connectivity
  • Wider adoption of smart devices
  • Energy & cost savings through usage of devices like smart meters, etc.
  • Safety concerns leading to monitoring of home from remote locations.
  • Consumer awareness as far as smart home monitoring is concerned.

According to Research and Markets report, the Indian home automation industry is expected to be over Rs. 30,000 crore by 2020. Exponential growth of wireless & mobile technology, affordable products, need for energy efficiency in smart homes & apartments have had a significant role to play in the growth of the segment.

Home Automation – ‘Confusion’ with ‘wider’ adoption

There is always confusion about Smart Homes in the minds of customers and that confusion multiplies if an existing home has to be converted to a smart home. Some of the lingering questions could be

  • Do I need to change the wiring of my devices ?
  • Should I change the switch panel ?
  • Do I need to add internet repeaters in other rooms ?
  • What cost savings would I get if I take the smart home route ?

You do not want to over-spend just to convert your existing home into a smart home. Imagine you have to change the internal wiring in order to accommodate the smart switch or any other smart home product. This would be an additional overhead! A better option would be a solution that would seamlessly integrate with the existing wiring or that requires very minimal changes.

Hogar Controls, a US & India based Home automation startup is disrupting the market for smart homes, with its cutting edge technology and ‘design first‘ products.

Hogar Controls – Enabling #SmartLife Experience

Seamless integration from a normal home to a smart home and detailed attention to design & aesthetics are two major plus points as far as Hogar Controls is concerned. How many times have you opened and read an email from a company because the subject line was interesting and content in the email was personalized? That company could either be an e-commerce firm promoting discounts on products or company cross-selling products as per your purchase history or sending a reminder about the price increase in items left in the shopping cart. Such companies create effective & customized email drip campaigns with tools like Snov.io. Drip emails are extremely useful and bring a lot of profit to their users.

It is the era of hyper-personalization and the intent of making an important decision [buying, subscribing to a newsletter, etc.] is key when the email is personalized. As per a report, 86% of consumers who responded to the survey feel that personalization plays a major role in making purchase decisions.

Though social media marketing is an integral part of online marketing strategy, email marketing is still a vital piece as far as online marketing is concerned. It is also referred to as Drip Email Marketing which is a direct marketing strategy where promotional pieces are sent across to existing and prospective customers, details of which are captured in a lead nurturing campaign. The name is derived from drip irrigation where plants & crops are watered in small amounts over a long period of time to achieve the necessary results. Just the same is with drip emails: one by one, emails are sent to people with some pauses.

Why use Snov.io?

Snov.io is a leading platform using which customers can create effective email drip campaigns that can be sent at different phases of the sales funnel or campaign’s life-cycle. It follows a freemium model hence you can use the majority of the features before you plan to use the premium version. The primary benefit of drip campaigns is that it keeps the existing customers updated about the progress as far as the product is concerned and generates better opportunities to cross-sell products. Using drip emails from Snov.io, you can schedule, design, and send drip campaigns based on specific actions, triggers, or customer history. It is a great way to keep the customers and users engaged through the life-cycle that comprises stages – Awareness, Interest, Consideration, and Purchase [pre & post].

Manual sending emails is a challenging task and it will not yield the same results like email drip campaigns built with the help of Snov.io. Using Snov.io, you can set multiple-step hyper-personalized email campaigns with minimal effort and track results to measure effectiveness and perform necessary actions. To get started with the creation of drip campaigns on Snov.io, you need to create an account on the platform.

A step-by-step guide to creating an email drip campaign

Now that you are logged in, you are all set to create an email drip campaign on Snov.io. Below, there are some of the major steps you need to take.

1. You need to visit the Email Drip Campaigns section on the web application. In this section, you can see a list of all the email drip campaigns that you have created so far. Click the New drip campaign button and give an appropriate name to the campaign. The name should be in-line with the purpose of the campaign; names like Campaign-1, Campaign-2, etc. should be avoided.

2. You can choose one of the active accounts or set up a new one for sending emails. Once you have the list of contacts to which you plan to send an email drip campaign, you need to decide whether you want to send emails to only verified email addresses or to all. If a recipient has multiple email addresses, you have the option to choose whether the campaign should be sent to all of them or only to the first one.

3. Once you select the sender’s email account the users will reply to or feedback will be sent, you need to select the recipients of the drip campaign. It is better to create a list of recipients since it eases the task of managing the list. There are four types of elements to create an email drip campaign – Email, Trigger, Delay, and Goal. In the campaign created by us, we seek feedback about the blog from our subscribers.

4. It is recommended to add the elements of personalization in a drip campaign since they make the campaign more effective. By default, there are 11 system variables, though if you need more, you can manually add the ones you need.

5. You can set a Trigger condition [Contact opened email or Contact clicked on the link from email] after which the drip campaign will stop for certain time duration and the next email will be sent later.

6. You can add the Delay element that will pause the campaign for the specified time after the reply is received.

7. Your drip emails may have a certain goal or goals associated with it e.g. in our case, no further emails should be sent to the subscribers after the feedback is received. After the set Goal is achieved, no further emails are sent in the automation flow. This gives flexibility to the campaign creator since they need not monitor the goals all the time. Shown below is the final drip campaign that we’ve created for seeking feedback about the blog from our subscribers.

The effectiveness of any type of email campaign also depends on the time when the campaign is sent to the recipient. For example, if your users are predominantly from India, it makes sense that the campaign is scheduled according to Indian Standard Time [IST]. Snov.io Email Drip Campaigns tool also lets you schedule campaigns as per different zones that you can achieve the best Click Through Rate [CTR] or Click To Open Rate [CTOR].

If you are an email marketer looking to improve the performance of the sales funnel, you should definitely give Snov.io Email Drip Campaigns a try.

Take the case of the following scenario – You are not a married person and obviously, you do not have any kids [Hopefully!]. But for some reason, you receive promotional emails from a vertical e-commerce website during their online shopping festival and guess what; the promotional email contains offers highlighting Baby Products. And to make things worse, the email campaign has zero-personalization and it is quite likely that the same email was sent to all their customers [without taking any personal traits of the customer into consideration]. As per a report, 86% of customers feel that personalization played a major role in their purchase decisions. This is the era of hyper-personalization and marketers have a plethora of information about customers – Age, Sex, Browsing History, Social Media information, Purchasing History, etc. which can be extremely helpful in charting their ‘hyper-personalization marketing’ strategy.

It is of prime importance that when an email campaign is sent to the customer; it is designed well, conveys the relevant information, is personalized, clearly has the ‘Call to Action’ and has a ‘well-designed subject line’ so that the recipient opens the email. To summarize, a sub-standard subject of an email campaign results in low ‘open rate’ and average email content & design results in low ‘Click-Through Rate’. Email marketing companies are also leveraging the power of Machine Learning [ML] & Artificial Intelligence [AI] in order to cater to the hyper-personalization requirement of email marketers. Entrepreneurs Ben Richardson and David Greiner faced a similar problem where they could not find email marketing a tool that could suffice their requirements and that is what made them co-found ‘Campaign Monitor’.  ‘Campaign Monitor’ is a global email-marketing company that offers a full range of email solutions to help marketers create meaningful, lasting connections with their audience. ‘Campaign Monitor’ streamlines every part of the email marketing process and the beauty of the product lies in its elegant design & scalability across different verticals.

Campaign Monitor – Overview

Campaign Monitor is an email marketing platform that companies can use to design personalized messages to its customers. Once a campaign is created using ‘Campaign Monitor’, tracking & analytics that is integrated with the dashboard can be used to measure the effectiveness of the campaign. The platform also provides list-management tools in the ‘List & subscribers’ tab where a brand can create segmented lists in order to send ‘personalized email campaigns’ based on the customer’s profile & other important data points about the customers in the list.

Along with personalized email campaigns, Campaign Monitor can also be used to create personalized customer journeys. Campaign Monitor can be integrated with close to 250+ platforms; some of them being Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, SalesForce, etc.

Campaign Monitor – Features

Design customer-centric emails – Once the marketer logs into the Campaign Monitor dashboard, he can use the drag & drop mechanism to create simple, yet beautifully designed emails. Due to the simplicity of the interface, designing email campaigns is a very simple task.

Insights & Analytics – Similar to Google Analytics, ‘Insights’ feature of Campaign Monitor helps in tracking the CTR, open rate, engagement, and geographical coverage of the audience. It also provides analytics through which marketers can improve the performance of a campaign.

Automation Emails – Through the ‘Journey’ feature, a marketer can set up customer journeys as well as RSS campaign to send automated updates from the customer’s website. You can choose the appropriate ‘Industry Vertical’ [Media & Entertainment, Publishing & Digital Media, Retail, Travel & Hospitality, Travel, Hospitality, etc.] and your intent of sending the email campaign. You could send a personalized welcome-email on signup or send an email in order to keep a customer engaged on the platform.

While creating the ‘customer journey’, you should choose the end-goal of the campaign. You could choose from the following options

  • Drive a series of actions
  • Drive conversions
  • Increase email engagement

Smarter Transactional Emails – Transactional emails are triggered by your own site or app, typically in response to a user’s action, such as an order confirmation or a plan renewal. They are some of the most valuable emails a company send but usually, aren’t measured or optimized. ‘New sign-up email’ is an ideal example of a transactional email and is used to welcome a new user. Transactional Email can be created using the Email builder feature and there is also an option to import your own design. This category of email is triggered on demand and you can choose from a portfolio of ‘wide range of designs’. API or SMTP can also be used to send email directly from your site or app.

Campaign Monitor – Email Campaign Creation

Campaign Monitor has a number of templates that can be used for creating an effective email campaign. It has a WYSIWYG editor through which you can design campaigns by using the ‘drag & drop’ facility. The design of the campaigns can be optimized for different mediums namely, desktop, mobile, tablet, etc. There is also an option to import HTML template or HTML design, but you might need certain coding knowledge to use the HTML feature.

A/B Testing or Split Testing is used widely by designers & developers to compare two versions of a web-page and measure the overall performance of the test. Campaign Monitor provides a facility of A/B Testing where a user can create two versions of the same campaign. This also helps in figuring out which design works well and designing a long-term marketing strategy. In a nutshell, Campaign Monitor can be used to send personalized email campaigns and trigger automated workflows based on customer behavior.

Technology and businesses are changing at a rapid pace and enterprises have to be more agile in accepting changes and challenges. Companies like Nokia and Kodak that were once considered torch-bearers in their respective businesses were outpaced by their competitors since they showed resistance in adapting to change. The same thinking is also applicable to managers, leaders, as well as employees in an organization. This is where ‘agile thinking’ or an ‘agile mindset’ can make a huge impact on the growth of any business/organization. One of the biggest challenges that enterprises are facing today is how to deal with disruptions arising from fast-paced change. This change is largely driven by technological innovation to the extent that it is forcing enterprises in every sector to put technology to the core [Tech@Core] of their business.

The change is so disruptive and fast that no enterprise regardless of its age/size can take its survival for granted. Hence, enterprises modeled after ‘mechanistic systems’ will struggle to deal with fast-paced change. ‘Enterprise Agility’ is the solution that will enable enterprises to deal with the fast-changing environment, but more importantly, to leverage change for competitive advantage and customer delight. This is the basic premise of Sunil Mundra’s book ‘Enterprise Agility – Being Agile in a Changing World‘ that shows how an enterprise can address the above mentioned problems and thrive in a dynamic business environment. We earlier had a detailed interaction about Agile, his insights into Enterprise Agility, etc.; you can find more details here.

Sunil Mundra is a Principal Consultant at ThoughtWorks with decades of consulting experience, working with some of the world’s largest enterprises. Enterprise Agility- Detailed Review

Before we deep-dive into the details of the book. It is very important to have a look at the sentiment of agility as mentioned in the Agile Manifesto – Agility is the ability to both create and respond to change in order to profit in a turbulent business environment. In order to understand agility, we can have a look at a scenario where ‘Your car is sent for servicing and neither Uber/Ola is available. Your end-goal is to reach the office‘. You either take the approach of car-pooling or use an altogether different transport system like the Bangalore metro to beat the traffic. This is where ‘Agile Thought-Process’ kicks in, where you have to come up with options, evaluate their pros and cons, and shortlist the best possible transport option [taking into account parameters like travel time, distance, cost, etc.]. This is a simple example of how an individual can deal with uncertainty, and the impact of ‘Agile Thinking’ becomes multiplied when organizations have to deal with change. This is where ‘Enterprise Agility’ by Sunil Mundra provides a step-by-step guide to facing and accepting uncertainty head-on. There are a lot of subtle comparisons in the book to drive interest and engagement. One such example is the comparison of ‘agility’ or ‘enterprise agility’ to the human body. Below is an excerpt from the book where the author draws that comparison

The approach of enterprise agility must be based on treating the enterprise like a living system, say a human body, rather than treating it like a machine, such as a car. When the machine slows down or breaks, the relevant part of the machine can be fixed or even replaced. However, if the overall health of a human being is not good, it can rarely be cured by just fixing a specific part or parts of the body.

Similar to the example mentioned above, the book talks about mechanisms to achieve optimal agility at the enterprise level, taking the key stakeholders – people, processes, organization structure, governance, technology, customers into consideration and how they can be enabled/leveraged to achieve enterprise agility. The book is partitioned into different sections as mentioned below

Let’s have a detailed look at each of these sections

Part 1 – This section examines the challenges of fast-paced change both from an opportunity and threat perspective. It also showcases how the capabilities underlying agility can help the enterprise to leverage change to its advantage.

Part 2 – This section examines the three foundation blocks of enterprise agility namely; modeling the enterprise of a living system, mindset, and culture and leadership. This section provides a lot of insights on how to migrate from a close-ended system to becoming a living system. It also sheds light on how leaders in an enterprise can maneuver the mindset and promote a culture of agility in the organization.

Part 3 – This section examines the critical components of an enterprise – organization, structure, process, people, technology, governance, customer, and patterns on how to unlock and enhance the agility of these components.

Part 4 – This section is helpful for managers and leaders who manage distributed teams and technology partners. It also shares insights on how to leverage them for enhancing enterprise agility.

Part 5 – The concluding part of the book provides a framework/action plan on how the learning can be implemented in the specific context of an enterprise.

The overall organization of the chapters in the book is uniform since it follows a common structure – Significance, Inhibitors to agility, Enablers of agility, and further references. The book provides detailed insights into Complex Adaptive Systems [CAS]

Complex Adaptive Systems are complex in that they are dynamic networks of interactions, and their relationships are not aggregations of the individual static entities, that is, the behavior of the ensemble is not predicted by the behavior of the components. They are adaptive in that the individual and collective behavior mutate and self-organize corresponding to the change-initiating micro-event or collection of events.

Some of the key characteristics of CAS are

  • Continuous evolution
  • Autonomous and self-organizing agents
  • Agent’s interactions influence system behavior
  • Agent’s behavior is driven by purpose
  • Variety as a source of strength

Agents are the change-makers in the CAS and CAS behavior is driven by inter-relationships, interaction, and inter-connectivity of the agents within a system and between a system and its environment. The table below highlights the summary of the implications for businesses, which are derived from the characteristics of a Complex Adaptive System [CAS]

Some of the key-takeaways from Sunil Mundra’s book ‘Enterprise Agility’ are

  • Drive agility-oriented change across the enterprise.
  • Understand why agility matters [more than ever] to modern enterprises.
  • Adopt and influence an Agile mindset in your teams and in your organization.
  • Understand the concept of a CAS and how to model enterprise and leadership behaviors on CAS characteristics to enhance enterprise agility.
  • Understand and convey the differences between Agile and True enterprise agility.
  • Create an enterprise-specific action plan to enhance agility.
  • Become a champion for enterprise agility.
  • Recognize the advantages and challenges of distributed teams, and how Agile ways of working can remedy the rough spots.
  • Enable and motivate your IT partners to adopt Agile ways of working.

Unlike other books on Agile and Agile Methodologies, Enterprise Agility by Sunil Mundra deep dives into the concepts of organizational agility with apt examples and well-developed framework for leaders. The author illustrates how to transition from Agile to agility at scale and sustain it to delight customers. The most interesting part about the book is that author Sunil Mundra has come up with learnings and examples based on his experience in delivery and consulting.

Target Audience

The book is apt for C-level executives, delivery managers, enterprise and leadership coaches, or any person who has influence in enabling change within an organization. The learnings from the book can be used by executives, irrespective of the size and scale of the organization.

There are a lot of sayings about the awesome feeling called ‘Love’. Many say that marriages are made in heaven and there is only one happiness in this life – ‘to love and to be loved‘. This concept has been depicted in many Indian movies and it also brings a feel-good factor in the audience present in the theater. Many novels have also been written on the same theme and surprisingly, most of them portray frustrated love and the upheavals it causes in life. If you ask any of your friends or colleagues about their ideal life-partner, the first quality that most of them look in their partner is ‘loving & caring attitude’. Many times, that feeling of everlasting love dies with time and the reason should be introspected by ‘the couple who was once madly in love with each other’.

The point to ponder over here is ‘If love is such an overwhelming emotion in human society, then why it does not last?’. Why is humanity losing faith in the existence of true love? Why are people losing faith in the institution of marriage? These are some of the important questions that would come to your mind when you hear the word ‘True Love’.

As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of books that preach about love or showcase ‘rosy things’ about that amazing feeling, but sadly you cannot employ their learnings in real life since situations are completely different in reality. This is what prompted noted author Shubha Vilas to come up with a book that explores the idea of eternal love, love that withstands the test of time. Unlike other books in a similar genre that only depict fictional love stories, his book ‘Perfect Love: 5.5 Ways to a Lasting Relationship’ is a thought-provoking narrative that presents six attributes of relationships that can make your love story a phenomenon that lasts a lifetime.

Today we review the book Perfect Love: 5.5 Ways to a Lasting Relationship by the noted author Shubha Vilas. We have reviewed earlier books by Shubha Vilas namely Open Eyed Meditations, Ramayana: The Game of Life (Shattered Dreams), and Ramayana: The Game of Life (The rise of Sun Prince).

About the Author

Shubha Vilas holds a degree in engineering and law with a specialization in patent law. But in essence, he is an author, a motivational speaker, lifestyle coach, and a storyteller par excellence. You can find more about him here

Detailed Review

Since childhood, many of us have been listening to mythological stories like the Ramayana, Mahabharatha, etc. and characters & learnings are in someway etched in our minds. There are many characters in each of these series that are ‘ideal portrayal’ of real love. Like Shubha Vilas’ previous books where he utilized the medium of ‘mythology’ to come up with stories & learnings that can still be implemented in today’s era, the stories in this book is primarily derived from the Mahabharatha,  the Srimad Bhagavat, and the Kathasaritsagara. The book comprises of selected six stories that have nail-biting twists and turns with edge-of-the-chair adventures. These are the tales of adventure and intense love, love that tests the limits of patience in lovers who find their faith in unconditional trust, compassion, and forgiveness.

Nala and Damayanti, Krishna and Rukmini, Shakuntala and Dushyanta, Udayana and Vasavadatta, Satyavan and Savitri, Draupadi and the five Pandava brothers – these are the accounts we may have heard many a time but not had an opportunity to understand in such depth and detail, and with such empathy. These stories are narrated in a beautiful manner, which keeps the readers engaged & connected, even if you have no prior knowledge about mythology or the central characters mentioned in the book. The stories are written in a simple, yet artistic manner so that it strikes a chord with the audience. In case you already have prior knowledge about these mythological characters, the book would add a fresh perspective to your understanding. Each chapter/story in the book ends with a crisp write-up about the learnings from the same. This is a similar format followed in his other books and we are glad that Shubha Vilas has stuck to the same format 🙂

The title mentions 5.5 ways and not 6; the primary reason is that the sixth way is a half-truth, which can be twisted either way. Below is the list of chapters in the book

  1. Wheel of Fortune
  2. The Golden Letter
  3. A Silent Voice
  4. The Other before Oneself
  5. The Woman who Chose
  6. A Condition about Conditions

There are many one-liners in each chapter and each word in the one-liner conveys a lot of meaning that makes you ponder about love, life, and yourself. Some of the notable one-liners are below:

  • Just like birthmarks on your body reveal your identity, your values are birthmarks on the soul that reveal your character.
  • When you jump to conclusions, you land in the quicksand of confusion. Ask rather than bask in conclusions.
  • Love is planted by active care, rooted in trust, watered by words, nourished by struggles together, protected by commitment, decorated with fond memories and made to blossom with reciprocation.
  • When you don’t make choices, life will not give you options.
  • To accept reality one needs dignity and humility. Dignity to stand after a fall and humility to say, ‘I tried’.
  • Attachment and detachment are twins that look alike but have completely different natures.
  • The cost of love can only be paid by the currency of sacrifice.
  • A disturbed person is looking for hope, not advice.
  • The only thing that is predictable about the future is that it’s unpredictable.
  • Just as one ant in the ear of a huge elephant throws it off completely, sometimes a tiny defect in a human being, amongst oodles of good qualities, messes up his life completely.

It is these small factors that add a lot of punch in each story and this is what makes the book ‘Perfect Love: 5.5 Ways to a Lasting Relationship’ a read whose learnings can be incorporated in real-life. You can refer to these learnings when you are at a crucial & critical juncture of your love-life!

Closing Thoughts

Perfect Love: 5.5 Ways to a Lasting Relationship is a book that can be read again and again since it reveals many profound thoughts that can nurture a different aspect of your life. This is one thing that is true for any book written by Shubha Vilas.

You may ask that in an era when the institution of marriage itself is being questioned, does it make sense to read a book that talks about love stories of stable marriages from an ancient age? You can find out the reason by delving deep into this book. Combing powerful story-telling with deep philosophical truths, ‘Perfect Love: 5.5 Ways to a Lasting Relationship’ is a treasure trove of scriptural wisdom for the modern age.
