Focusing on the evolution of the Indian Business Process Management (BPM) sector and the role of new technologies in creating a strategic road-map for the future, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) kick-started the two-day NASSCOM BPM Strategy Summit 2016 in Bengaluru. Growing at a CAGR of over 8%, the BPM industry clocked a total revenue of USD 28 billion during FY-2016. With a share of over 25% of the total IT-BPM exports, the industry added 49,000 employees to its workforce, at a rate of 4.7%, taking the total no. of employees to 1,086,000.

Speaking about the wave of change, Mr. R Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM said

Automation, Digitalized processes and new business models are enabling the BPM sector to take a step forward in adopting a more strategic role as compared to being just another outsourcing platform. The next wave of growth for the industry will come from increasing demand of technologies like advanced analytics, social media, mobility and other new technologies, driving demand for specialised services. The BPM sector has always been a major contributor towards the growth and the industry today has a more strategic and intellectual role to play, gravitating towards global competitiveness.

NASSCOM also discussed the preliminary recommendations of its Consumer Interest Protection Task Force (CIPTF) in dealing with reputational risk. These recommendations will be shared with the Government and other relevant agencies in greater detail. The recommendations identify the following intervention points to address cases of tech fraud, and enhance consumer interest protection.

i. Prevention via development of a common code of practice featuring standards security, privacy and ethical practices

ii. Detection & Reporting by setting up an accessible whistle-blowing mechanism for registering complaints

iii. Investigation through an independent govt. investigation agency with the jurisdiction and power to co-ordinate between governmental agencies and departments

The Indian BPM industry is a leader in the outsourcing business with revenues of US $28 billion, this leadership position is built by providing high quality services as-well-as confidence to overseas clients that data of their customers would be safe and secure in India.

The recommendations and action points put forth by NASSCOM Consumer Interest Protection Task Force, will help create a more secure ecosystem for the industry, enabling it to focus on growing from strength to strength. For the BPM industry to grow to USD 50 billion by 2020, the BPM Council has taken certain focused initiatives to enable this progress. The BPM Council has focused on re-branding and re-positioning the industry from the supply and demand side respectively. In addition to this, the Council is working on building a Centre of Excellence on data sciences and capacity development for emerging players and skill and talent.

NASSCOM also announced the Top 10 BPM exporters in India for the year 2016. Genpact Ltd. leads as top exporter followed by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Wipro BPO in second and third places respectively.

About NASSCOM

NASSCOM is the premier trade body and the chamber of commerce of the IT-BPM industries in India. NASSCOM is a global trade body with more than 2100 members, which include both Indian and multinational companies that have a presence in India. NASSCOM’s member and associate member companies are broadly in the business of software development, software services, software products, consulting services, BPO services, e-commerce & web services, engineering services and animation and gaming. NASSCOM’s membership base constitutes over 95% of the industry revenues in India and employs over 3.5 million professionals.

Keeping in mind the growth of IT solutions in every step of marketing value chain, NASSCOM organized the second edition of the MarTech Confluence 2016 at Hyatt Regency in Mumbai. With the theme, Marketing Technology : The Innovation that drives ROI, this year’s confluence focused on the need for digital solutions to meet the rapidly growing consumer demand and information technology’s role in facilitating the expectations and strengthening customer engagement.

R Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM while speaking at the event said

Marketers today require integrated technology to support the complex challenges of becoming a customer centric enterprise, which understands their needs and changing preference in real-time. Building a set of new competencies keeping in mind the customer needs has become imperative and technology is going to help build that expertise.

Role of Technology in Marketing has increased in the recent times with technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics now playing major roles in understanding and meeting customer needs and creating more personalised solutions. The rising discipline of Customer Experience (CX) has helped companies put customer needs at the center of their planning and processes.

Marketers are now using CX solutions and measurement tools to track their ability to deliver customer-obsessed outcomes. As per NASSCOM reports, IT players’ share in global MarTech industry will grow to USD 45-55 billion by 2025. Revenues from customer experience segment itself will be around USD 13-1 5 billion, analytics will present a USD 12-14 billion opportunity, while creative design and mobile will be USD 8-10 billion and USD 7-9 billion respectively. The MarTech trend will also witness a shift in the role of Chief Marketing Officer (CMOs) role as they become key spenders with respect to not only customer facing technology, but also back-end infrastructure.

The new age marketing has become disruptive and technology has made communication real time and has enabled customers to search out information on their own terms and connect directly with brands’ content and commerce capabilities directly. Further, the ever-changing purchase paths of customers; the emergence of new channels, and the constant change in the MarTech landscape now poses challenges to marketers trying to optimize their budgets in an effort to win, serve, and retain customers.

According to NASSCOM, as more marketers will embrace omni-channel marketing, investments in the operations automation and integration of various online and offline platforms will rise and the market size for such opportunities would reach around USD 25 billion by 2025.

Besides adopting core technology solutions in the marketing function, marketers are also engaging with IT service providers for design development. Increasing digitization of the marketing function has changed the business model of companies and extensively impacted other functions such as product development, sales, customer service, supply chain, and IT. Marketing has become more aligned to business objectives with digital thinking becoming embedded into overall corporate strategy.

The day-long conference was attended by key industry leaders from the fields of IT, Entertainment, marketing and advertising, who discussed the new and unique ways that companies can adopt . Some of the key speakers at the event included R Chandrashekhar, NASSCOM; Dave Frankland of Selligent, Vivek Prabhakar of Chumbak, Siddharth Banerjee of Vodafone, Nischal Shetty of Crowdfire and Malini Agarwal of Miss Malini Blog.

The National Association of Software & Services Companies [NASSCOM] launched The Future of Internet in India report in partnership with Akamai Technologies. The study was researched and created by YourStory in collaboration with Nasscom and with supporting data from Akamai and other sources. The report, launched by R Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM and Dr. Tom Leighton, Co-founder, CEO Akamai Technologies, aims to understand the impact of the Internet on the way we live, learn, work, shop and connect and focuses on the future trends that will change the landscape of India by 2020.

Speaking at the launch, R Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM stated that

India’s Internet consumption has already exceeded USA to become No. 2 globally. Keeping into consideration the massive impact that the Internet is creating across sectors, it has become the greatest disruptor of our age by changing the way we work, interact socially and live life in general. By 2020, the Internet is expected to penetrate deeper in the hinterlands of the country, helping to create more opportunities for everyone.

The rapid growth of the Internet and its expansion into verticals including e-Commerce, Travel and Hospitality, Public Sector, Financial Technology and Media is a clear indication of the state of things to come.

According to the report, India’s Internet user base is the second largest after China. Globally, the number of Internet users is expected to touch 4170 million by 2020 [Source – DazeInfo]. The growth of the Internet has successfully created a strong ecosystem for new businesses to tap into growing markets and create solutions to address their demands.

Sidharth Malik, Vice President and Managing Director, India, Akamai Technologies said

The start-up ecosystem in India, coupled with the government’s initiatives make the Internet accessible to every citizen across the country, is helping India set the stage to enable large numbers of ‘netizens’ to reap the benefits of the Internet. With the rise of digital natives and the increased adoption of smartphones, Internet penetration in India will stretch beyond the large cities, as more services and devices come online. This is also a great opportunity for enterprises to harness the power of the Internet to innovate and scale operations.

Online shopping will account for two-thirds of the total e-Commerce market, edging out travel

According to the report, the overall e-Commerce market in India was valued $17 billion in FY 2016, and by 2020, India will have an estimated 702 million smart phones in use and mobile phones will emerge as the preferred device for shopping, accounting for 70% of total online shopping. The fashion and lifestyle segment will emerge as the largest e-tailing category with a 35% contribution to e-Commerce GMV by 2020, overtaking the consumer electronics segment which dominates the sales of Indian e-Commerce industry at present.

50% of travel transactions to be online by 2020

Travel across India, for social visits, leisure, shopping and holidays is all set to increase and more people will be booking online, taking advantage of competitive pricing offered by online travel agents [OTAs] and aggregators. An increasing amount of user-generated content online [views on social media, reviews on websites, etc.] is driving aspirational travel, tipping the scales in favour of trips that were once only contemplated, never undertaken.

Media and OTT – All moving online, one app at a time

The availability of affordable smartphones and tablets has encouraged the second screen phenomenon. With the rapid adoption of smartphones and next generation networks, content consumption patterns and consumer engagement channels are rapidly evolving. Even in its nascent phase, the video-on-demand [VOD] market is highly competitive in India.

Financial technology – Disrupting the way India pays online

Fintech is disrupting financial services and is likely to have far more widespread impact on society and the Indian economy, both directly and indirectly. The fintech software market within this was pegged at $1.2 billion [13-15%, Source – NASSCOM Fintech Report].

The remaining 87% focus on services, primarily in payments [60% of the market, including ATM/Point of Sale] and core banking services. Overall, according to the report, India’s fintech market is expected to grow 1.7x between 2015 and 2020. While cash-on-delivery may remain the preferred mode of payment for newer users, keep in mind that use of mobile banking and e-wallets is surging.

Conclusion – The future is bright but there is a greater need to collaborate

In times to come, while mobile will be a key access device, larger devices will continue to be important in areas like education and business. Multiple stakeholders will need to work in tandem to bring the next generation of Internet users [rural based, mobile centric, local language focused] online in India.

Further, with digital connectivity, the risk of cyber-crimes also increases. With multitudes of people using e-Commerce and transacting online, there is a huge need for technologies that can prevent data theft. India is witnessing a huge demand for security professionals [technologists and analysts, alike]. In line with these growing demands, security has become one of the key focus areas for NASSCOM Sector Skills Council, working towards creating the right cyber-security skill sets for Indian IT professionals.
