<div style="text-align: justify;">One of the most common sayings about Failure is &#8220;<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Failures are stepping stone to success</span>&#8221; but, what if we could learn important lessons from someone else&#8217;s failures.Most of the times,Failure is a exaggerated term which should otherwise be termed as &#8220;Failed Attempt&#8221; and wouldn&#8217;t be great to share your life experiences with others under one roof <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" width="15" height="15" />.FailCamp is one such wonderful initiative[better to call it as an initiative rather than an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference">unconference</a>] by <a href="http://www.kiruba.com/">Kiruba Shankar</a> and his team.</p>
<p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_45R1xOye4y4/SQDHtue0q4I/AAAAAAAAAwo/4AD0xiE4d-4/s1600-h/FailCamp.jpg" rel="lightbox[1912]"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 109px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_45R1xOye4y4/SQDHtue0q4I/AAAAAAAAAwo/4AD0xiE4d-4/s320/FailCamp.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260423953154091906"/></a></p>
<p>The bottom-line of <a href="http://barcamp.org/failcamp">FailCamp</a> -</div>
<p style="text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">We all make mistakes and learn from it to become a better person. Won&#8217;t it be great to learn from other&#8217;s mistakes so that we don&#8217;t make the same ones! </p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"> The focus is really not about the failure. It&#8217;s about why we failed and what lessons we learnt from it. Let&#8217;s not be ashamed about failing. Let&#8217;s celebrate failure. Let&#8217;s look straight into its eyes</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">.</span> </p>
</blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">To be very honest,off late;I have taken lot of hasty decisions[which have taught me lot of things] and it would be really nice to share those learnings with the audience.Well,not to forget listening to other&#8217;s mistakes would be great learning for all of us !!!</p>
<p>So, interested in FailCamp:</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);">Date and Time</span> &#8211; 16th November 2008<br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);">Venue</span> &#8211; <a href="http://www.tenthplanet.in/">Tenth Planet</a>, Chennai. The venue was just <a href="http://twitter.com/kiruba/statuses/969089814">finalized few days back</a> and  I am quite excited to meet my old unconference buddies <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_wink.gif" alt="wink" title="wink" width="15" height="15" /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);">Registration </span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">-</span><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);"> </span><a href="http://barcamp.org/failcamp?edit=1">FailCamp Wiki</a></p>
<p>Before ending this article, I would like to share few lines from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulo_Coelho">Paulo Coelho</a>&#8216;s book &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manual_of_the_Warrior_of_Light">Manual of the warrior of light</a>&#8220;<br />
<blockquote style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-weight: bold;">A warrior of light shares with others what he knows of the path.Anyone who gives help also receives help and needs to teach what he has learnt.That is why he sits by the fire and recounts his day on the battlefield</span>.</p></blockquote>

<div style="text-align: justify;">There are a lot of <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/himanshu.sheth">SlideShare</a> presentation embeds on this blog so,wouldn&#8217;t it be great to know it&#8217;s secrets straight from the horse&#8217;s mouth <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_wink.gif" alt="wink" title="wink" height="15" width="15" /> Below is a video coverage of <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/AmitRanjan/">Amit Ranjan</a>[Co-Founder of SlideShare] sharing his ideas about <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_marketing">Viral Marketing</a>[at <a href="http://www.proto.in/">Proto</a>,which I had missed] and it&#8217;s corresponding implementation at SlideShare.</p>
<p><embed src="http://blip.tv/play/AdLMdo_RcQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="false" height="318" width="352"></embed></p>
<p>Some very interesting points from his presentation:<br />
<blockquote>In simple terms,Amit describes <span style="font-weight: bold;">Viral Marketing as a combination of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_analytics">Web Analytics</a> &amp; <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology">Psychology</a></span> and he justifies this very well in his presentation.The other interesting part is a term coined by him called &#8220;<span style="font-weight: bold;">Shared DJs</span>&#8221; [guys who are responsible for indirect marketing of the website by spreading it's content through mediums like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog">Blogs</a>,<a href="http://www.twitter.com/hjsblogger">Twitter</a>,<a href="http://www.friendfeed.com/hjsblogger">FriendFeed</a>,<a href="http://www.delicious.com/himanshu.sheth">Delicious</a> etc] who are as important as the content creators &amp; both of them should co-exist for the success of the website.</p></blockquote>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Few months back, we had a <a href="http://thoughtsprevail.blogspot.com/2008/04/dont-sell-website-sell-its-uniqueness.html">guest article</a> from <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/nithyadayal">Nithya Dayal</a>, co-founder of <a href="http://www.muziboo.com/">Muziboo</a> &amp; it is nice to see Muziboo getting shortlisted for the presentation !!! <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/prateekdayal">Prateek Dayal</a> has shared lots of interesting views about the event &amp; his experience on pitching in front of the audience !!!</div>
<p>Notable experiences from <a href="http://www.prateekdayal.net/blog">Prateek Dayal&#8217;s blog</a>:
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Unlike some of the other startups, we had a walk through and no ppt</span>. I think eventually turned out to be good as the response to the demo was very encouraging.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">I liked the fact that proto mentioned that 3 companies have shut shop. I think its great to see that failure is no longer considered a bad thing</span>. There was also a Proto for Dummies video which was pretty well done. I think the videos will be up on youtube pretty soon.</p>
<p>I had always heard that talking to investors gives you a good perspective and I think its true. I had also heard that there are quite a few senior startuppy people who give a lot of gyaan and try to pull you down and I think that is true too. <span style="font-weight: bold;">In general its not very hard to find a few people in proto who look like they have come down there just to feel important by giving gyaan to clueless entrepreneurs like me</span>.</p></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">You can read the complete article <a href="http://www.prateekdayal.net/blog/2008/07/21/proto-the-startup-event-from-the-eyes-of-a-presenter/">here</a>.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);"><u>Coverage across the Blogosphere</u></span>:<br />There are lot of other blogs that have covered the event and you can find them <a href="http://www.technorati.com/search/proto4?authority=a4&amp;language=en&amp;page=1">here</a>.</p>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">Few days back, I had blogged about an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference">Unconference</a> named <a href="http://thoughtsprevail.blogspot.com/2008/05/ideacamp-ideate-innovate-and-implement.html">IdeaCamp,Pune</a> which was all about sharing and discussing ideas.There were lot interesting people that I came across during the span of the entire event.Amongst those interesting set of people , there was a startup guy <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/praneetkumar">Praneet Kumar</a> who knew well about cyber law, patents, trademarks etc.</div>
<p>Praneet is the co-founder of a startup <a href="http://www.webdefenders.com/">WebDefenders Consulting Pvt. Ltd</a> [website under construction] which is into cyber law, ethical hacking and few other activities[which are listed below]. WebDefenders looked a different and interesting startup , in terms of it&#8217;s offerings and services <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="biggrin" title="biggrin" height="15" width="15" />.</p>
<p>Below is a small Q&amp;A with Praneet Kumar from WebDefenders.The Q&amp;A session is divided into 2 parts : WebDefenders and Entrepreneurship.</p>
<p>Note : &#8220;I&#8221; in the conversation refers to Praneet Kumar.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);"><u>WebDefenders [How,When, Why etc.]</u></span></p>
<p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_45R1xOye4y4/SEWp3-gwl_I/AAAAAAAAAs8/LNd8P3rVHB4/s1600-h/WebDefenders.png" rel="lightbox[1880]"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_45R1xOye4y4/SEWp3-gwl_I/AAAAAAAAAs8/LNd8P3rVHB4/s400/WebDefenders.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207755323262146546" border="2" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Can you tell something about WebDefenders ?</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Well, WebDefenders is a unique endeavor in itself. <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">It provides a complete solution package for cyber security which includes cyber law, cyber crime investigation, ethical hacking, cyber forensics and its related training and education</span>.
</p></div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">What are some of the sectors that WebDefenders caters to ?</span><br />Well! We wish to target initially the following sectors:<span><br /></span></p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;">
<li><span>Banking and      Finance</span></li>
<li><span>IT</span></li>
<li><span>Government</span></li>
<li><span>Authorized investigating body [both Government &amp; Non Government]</span></li>
<li><span>Education [Higher or Specialized]</span></li>
<li><span>Defense</span></li>
<li><span>Matters      related Legal Exigencies</span></li>
</ol>
<div>  </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">          </div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;"> Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Cyber Crime &amp; Security is a niche area, so when did you guys feel that the time is right to venture into this field ?</span><br />Well! We have been involved in this area individually from 2004-05 but it was in mid 2007 that we [partners] met online, later became friends and finally the partners.</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">            </div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">What is your take on the recent happenings in the cyberspace with respect to cyber crime, security etc ?</span><br />Hmm! <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">We feel that the major problem which India, particularly, is facing today is an acute crisis of awareness about cyber security with respect to cyber vulnerabilities. It is a now the cyber-age and so chances of being victim of cyber crimes is very evident</span>.</p>
<p>Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Since, your startup also caters to Intellectual Property[IP] services,what are some of the basic things that startup should take care of while filing a patent ?</span><br />Hmm! If someone has a creative idea or invention, or is interested in starting a techno company (s)he may wish to protect, the first thing (s)he does is contact a patent attorney and file a patent application. (S)he believes that (s)he has protected his/her invention, so is (s)he protected?<span> </span>Not necessarily!!!</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Preparing a patent application is &#8220;</span><i style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">only</i><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">&#8221; one of many action steps to consider</span>. But along with it, I opine following things must be kept in mind:
<ol style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">
<li>Understand your product and market. When discussing your invention or idea, it is helpful to know &#8220;What is the ultimate goal?&#8221; &amp; &#8220;What impediments to market entry exist?&#8221;</li>
<li>Expand and test the limits of your invention.</li>
<li>At least some analysis needs to be done to support broad claims of a patent.</li>
<li>Identify your competition.</li>
<li>It is important to understand the patents that protect your competitors.</li>
<li>Consider foreign markets.</li>
<li>Contemplate costs.</li>
<li>Select a proper attorney.</li>
</ol>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">  </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">  </div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">So, when one has an idea which (s)he intends to develop it, (s)he must be a bit more careful to consider all the requisites and technicalities involved before jumping into the patenting process. One may find that there is a lot more to consider than merely filing a patent application.</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Isn&#8217;t it!</div>
<p style="color: rgb(102, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">
<p> <u style="font-weight: bold;">Views on Entrepreneurship</u></p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">    </div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">You took a plunge right after your internship in Persistent Systems, which is quite early; so what are some of things that came into your mind ?</span><br />It was one of my most adorable experiences as in how an organization has to be run transparently to such great heights.</p>
<div style="text-align: justify; font-style: italic;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">I read a book called &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Dad,_Poor_Dad">Rich Dad, Poor Dad</a>&#8221; by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kiyosaki">Robert T Kiyosaki</a>, gifted to me by my dad when I was in my 2</span>nd<span style="font-weight: bold;"> yr of B.A.LLB.I then only decided that I am going for a business. After that I opted for a few internships to learn more about running a successful firm.</span><span><span>I am a voracious reader. All these things together gave me the adequate impetus to choose for what I am today</span>.</span>
</p></div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">You have a good team with you, what are some of the things you take care (as a startup) while building your team ?</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Someone rightly said: It&#8217;s not you [organization] who build team, it&#8217;s your team which builds you.</span> God gave me two gifts <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/neeket">Neeket Pokharrna</a> and <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/7/762/566">Rohan Vibhandik</a>&#8230;.. rest happened automatically <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="biggrin" title="biggrin" height="15" width="15" /></p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">    </div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">You were at IdeaCamp Pune, what is your take on such unconferences and how would that help startups ?</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">I feel that low mind talks about people, average mind talks about event but great minds talk only &#8220;IDEA&#8221;</span>. That&#8217;s why a person of my frequency would have high stakes on such unconferences because any startup needs &#8220;the&#8221; association. In my views it&#8217;s &#8220;the&#8221; place for starts ups which aspires high.</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">          </div>
<p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-align: justify;">To corroborate this, I would like to state what my mind believes.<span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Good association gives you good thoughts based on which one ends up doing good deeds. These good deeds, if performed again and again develop into good habits</span>. All good habits if taken together form what we call a good &#8220;character&#8221; and no doubt, Character is the decisive factor.</p>
<p>Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Can you throw some light on the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Pune ?</span><br />I as a person really appreciate and adore the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Pune. <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">It&#8217;s amazingly healthy, young, energetic, and explosive and it has what we call the &#8220;X&#8221; factor</span>. One need less admit this fact, in presence of entrepreneurial endeavors like the Bajaj, the Punewalas, the Firodiya&#8217;s, the DSK Toyota&#8217;s, the Manikchand, the Persistent, the techie HUBS of the city and the list goes on. <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">The silicon valley of east, the oxford of east, PUNE ROCKS….</span> <span> </span></p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">      </div>
<p>Q. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Many of startup activities happen in reputed institutes like IIT/IIM, what are some steps that an entrepreneur can take to carry Entrepreneurial message to other institutes (like yours or mine) ?</span><br />Wonderful question indeed! Just One expression for this &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">&#8220;believe in your IDEAS, have the hunger for right association and BOSS just do it, no excuse please&#8221;</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">1. Great Idea.</span><br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">2. Great Team.</span><br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">3. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootstrapping_%28business%29">Bootstrapping</a> / <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venture_capital">Venture Funding</a>.</span><br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">4. Marketing and &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;</span></p>
<p>As I have mentioned in the <a href="http://thoughtsprevail.blogspot.com/2008/05/dead-end-for-startups.html">previous article</a>, IMHO execution would always be the key; whether you are a startup guy or work for a startup.Also,when we think about Startups, <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;">the first comparison that always comes to our mind is </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley">The Silicon Valley</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;">, but many times, we tend to forget that Indian Entrepreneurial Ecosystem is different from that in the US.May be it would still be many years when a college dropout like </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;"> or a whiz-kid like </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;" href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/4/361/31">Anshul Samar</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;"> of </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;" href="http://www.elementeo.com/">Elementio</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-style: italic;"> would be accepted in our ecosystem</span>.</p>
<p>In this article, I would like to focus on the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cobweb of Myths</span>[termed Myth-Web] around Indian Startups , which when dusted off, may lead to a better ecosystem.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;"><u>Note</u></span>:<br />The views in this article are my personal views and it would be nice, if someone corrects me wherever required<span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span><img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_neutral.gif" alt="neutral" title="neutral" height="15" width="15" />.</p>
<p>1. <span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 0);"><u>Ecosystem = IIT(s) / IIM(s)</u></span><br /></span>There is no point in mentioning how much impression premier institutions like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Technology">Indian Institute Of Technology[IIT]</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institute_of_Management">Indian Institute of Management[IIM]</a> bring in our minds. For sure, they bring the best of the minds together under one roof, but Startups are not only restrained to them.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">In fact, an attempt should be made to take the IIT culture to the normal colleges(like </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);" href="http://www.pvppcoe.ac.in/">mine</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">) so, that there is an entrepreneurial ecosystem developed there as well.We need to get rid of the pre-made impression that &#8220;Entrepreneurs can only come from IIT&#8217;s&#8221;</span>. IMHO, if we limit ourselves to only premier institutions, we won&#8217;t be able to find our future Mark(s) or Anshul(s) <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_sad.gif" alt="sad" title="sad" height="15" width="15" /></p>
<p>2. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 51, 0);"><u>Venture Funding = Success</u></span><br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Funding always holds a major aspect for any startup but many times, people feel that &#8211; More the funding, more successful is the Startup.</span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);" href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/dharmesh">Dharmesh Shah</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"> of </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);" href="http://www.hubspot.com/">HubSpot</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"> has  a very nice </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);" href="http://onstartups.com/home/tabid/3339/bid/5307/default.aspx">article on the same when His Startup raised $12 million in series B funding</a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">.</span><br />Money is always important in any business and each one of us understand the same but that alone does not materialize into success.This is an impression that is prevelant everywhere and hence, Hubspot[though not an Indian startup] was taken as an example.</p>
<p>3. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 51, 0);"><u>Media = Success</u></span><br />With media not only restrained to mass media, so called Media Coverage has become somewhat simpler. <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Media may be coverage on blogs, websites &#8230; But there is always a downside to the coverage in the media.Many startups(may not mention the name here) try to be in the news(in Magazines and other media) and this coverage is many times wrongly treated as Success .And it becomes difficult to digest this success</span>.<br />With <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2">Web 2.0</a>, media(except print media) has completely changed so, &#8220;Being in the media at the right time may lead to wonders else things may crumble&#8221; <img class="emoticon" src="http://wolverinex02.googlepages.com/icon_sad.gif" alt="sad" title="sad" height="15" width="15" /></p>
<p>4. <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 51, 0);"><u>Startups can be built in isolation</u></span><br />Why Bangalore is so famous in India is because it has a Brand Image attached to it and the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem is by far the best in India.But it is not the same elsewhere.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Many of us forget that the Ecosystem is a crucial factor in any startup and to bring a change , we need to be a part of that ecosystem</span>.<br />I have spoken to few entrepreneurs from other cities(apart from Mumbai / Chennai / other metros) and the importance of Ecosystem is not yet penetrated there&#8230;.Startups need all the support they can and hence, they can be built in isolation for some period [after which they have to join the change to make the change].</p>
